CDW announces expanded retail solution offerings

Distributor CDW Corporation has announced an expanded portfolio of offerings for retailers of all sizes, including merchant services from Chase Paymentech Solutions, CDW Store-in-a-Truck, integrated point of sale (POS) and automatic identification data capture (AIDC) solutions, and specialty solutions such as digital signage. CDW has also grown its team of retail technology specialists to help businesses develop comprehensive solutions that meet their front-to-back technology needs.
"The current economic environment is challenging for consumers and retailers alike, so more than ever, retailers need to make sound investments in affordable technology solutions that allow them to improve their competitive position and pass savings on to their customers," said Marc Barnett, senior manager of solutions, CDW. CDW's newly expanded retail technology offerings include:

These solutions help achieve real-time inventory tracking, improve sale price accuracy and reduce manual processes, while enabling customer-focused rewards and loyalty programs.
*CDW Store-in-a-Truck, which takes a complete blueprint of a retailer's IT, including servers, power, networking, telephony, merchant services and POS lanes, and replicates it at new stores and in store refreshes, enabling retailers to simplify IT implementation.
*Digital Signage, which allows retailers to use an interactive messaging platform to communicate with employees and customers and enables organizations to deliver effective real-time advertising, while minimizing advertising, communications, and human resource costs with self serve kiosks.
*Retail Technology Specialists, who understand retailing business challenges and work to develop custom-configured solutions and specialized services for optimal technology performance.

LAKE SHORE LIONS - Four Downs: L.T. finally ready for takeoff?:
"Some other observations: Anquan Boldin didn't show any rust in his return from a head injury with nine catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns at Carolina.
It's safe to start him in all leagues again. ... The same goes for Brian Westbrook, who wasn't bothered with his rib injury while gaining 209 total yards and two touchdowns against Atlanta. Have no fear in starting him every week.
... If Matt Jones and Deuce McAllister are going to be suspended, they went out with good games. Jones had eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown against Cleveland, and McAllister had 85 total yards and a touchdown against San Diego. Keep an eye on what happens with them because it could have an impact in plenty of Fantasy leagues.
...Clinton Portis is the MVP right now. He ran for 126 yards at Detroit and now joins O.J. Simpson as the only players in NFL history with 120 yards rushing in five straight games. Portis also has seven rushing touchdowns and is thriving in Jim Zorn's offense.

7 Principles of Investing in a Volatile Market. Dollar cost averaging 1.825680.100
In volatile markets, it’s common to feel uneasy
about your investments. It’s only natural. But rest
assured, market volatility is completely normal and
is to be expected. In fact, whether you invest in a
lifecycle fund, or manage your own investments,
the current market conditions may actually work to
your advantage.
1. Clarify your investment strategy.
Living with market volatility is a lot easier when you
have a fi rm investment strategy in place. To create
your strategy, you’ll need to understand several key
factors, including:
• Your time horizon
• Your goals
• Your tolerance for risk
Your time horizon is determined by counting the
number of years left until you plan to retire. Your
primary goal is to accumulate enough savings to
create the income you need in retirement. And your
tolerance for risk refl ects your broader fi nancial
situation — your savings, your income, your debt —
and how you feel about it all. Looking at the whole
picture will help you clarify if your strategy should be
aggressive, conservative, or somewhere in between.
2. Match investments to your comfort level.
As a legendary mutual fund manager once put it, “The
key to stock investing isn’t the brain. It’s the stomach.”
Never is this statement more true than in a volatile
marketplace. Even if your time horizon is long enough
to warrant an aggressive-growth portfolio, you need
to make sure you’re comfortable with the short-term
ups and downs you’ll encounter. If watching your plan
balance fl uctuate is too nerve-racking for you, think
about a portfolio that feels right and set realistic
expectations.
3. Diversify, diversify, diversify.
One way to help protect yourself from market downturns
is to own various types of investments. First,
consider spreading your investments across the three
asset classes — stocks, bonds, and short-term investments.
Then, to help offset risk even more, diversify the
investments within each asset class. Keep in mind,
however, that diversifi cation doesn’t ensure a profi t or
guarantee against loss.
4. Invest for the long term.
To help calm the jitters caused by short-term fl uctuations,
it’s best to focus on long-term trends and your
long-term goals. Market volatility decreases over time.
As the chart on the next page shows, dramatic shortterm
changes in value can be positive or negative. And
historically, time has reduced the risk of holding a
diversifi ed stock portfolio.

and invest in a lifecycle fund
5. Don’t try to time the market.
No one can consistently predict the market, not
even the experts. Yet many investors think they can
guess what will happen, based on hunches or rumors.
Unless you know precisely when to buy or sell, you
can, and probably will, miss the market. That can
really cost you. Most of the market’s gains occur in
just a few strong, but unpredictable, trading days
here and there. To benefi t from the market’s longterm
performance, you need to be in the market on
those days. This means you have to invest for the
long run and stick with it throughout the market’s
ups and downs.
6. Do well “on average.”
By investing regularly over months, years, and
decades, you can actually benefi t from a volatile
market. Through a time-proven investment technique
called dollar cost averaging, you simply put a set
amount in each of your plan investments every pay
period, regardless of how the market’s doing. Over
the years, your money buys more units of each
investment option when prices are low, and fewer
when the prices are high. As a result, the average
price per share of your investments may be lower
than if you invested all your money at once. (See
the table to the right.) More importantly, you avoid
the temptation of trying to time the market.
7. Consider a hands-off approach.
To help ease the pressure of managing investments
in a volatile market, some investors prefer to take a
“hands-off” approach by investing in lifecycle funds.
Lifecycle funds offer management assistance by
providing investments that represent various asset
classes and investment styles in a single fund based
on a single retirement date. The investments are then
rebalanced on an ongoing basis to become more
conservative as the fund approaches its target
retirement date and beyond. The diversifi cation and
asset allocation of lifecycle funds can help reduce
volatility and risk, although they can’t ensure a profi t
or guarantee against a loss.

Because asthma affects your child’s ability to breathe, it’s a serious condition. It can even cause death. That’s why asthma needs to be treated by a doctor, and why you need to carefully follow the doctor’s instructions.

Anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAX-sis) is a serious allergies reaction that can happen in people who have allergies or asthma, and is caused by a number of normally harmless things who have allergies or asthma, and is cased by a number of normally harmless things called allergens. Most often foods, insect stings, and medicines cause it. Each year, about 40 people die after an anaphylactic reaction to insect stings, and about 100 people die from reactions to food.
Anaphylactic signs (or symptoms) usually do not happen the first time that you are near the allergen. That’s because it can take some time for your body to build up a dislike for the allergen.
Signs of anaphylaxis usually start in 5 to 30 minutes of coming in contact with the allergen. But sometimes symptoms can begin after 1 hour. An anaphylactic reaction can make it hard to breathe, or cause you to pass out. It can even cause death. That’s why anaphylaxis is always an emergency.
It is important to know when anaphylaxis is happening, hoe to treat it and how to stop it from happening again.
What are the signs of anaphylaxis?
Signs of anaphylaxis usually include several of the following:
A red rash, with welts, that usually is itchy.
Swollen throat or swollen areas of the body.
Wheezing (breathing that sounds like whistling from your chest).
Passing out
Chest tightness
Trouble breathing
A hoarse voice
Trouble swallowing
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal cramping
A pale or red color to the face and body.
Anaphylaxis is a dangerous medical emergency that can lead to death. If you think you or your child may be having an anaphylactic reaction, call 9-1-1 to get immediate help.

What are food allergies?
When some people eat certain foods, even a tiny bit, they can have an allergic reaction, such as a rash, runny nose or itchy eyes. Some could even have a more serious reaction that can cause death. That type of reaction is called anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAX-sis).
What are the signs of a food allergy?
Your body could respond in several ways if your are allergic to a certain food:
Your skin could become red, itchy or develop a rash.
Your nose could become stuffy or itchy, your might start sneezing, or your eyes could itch and develop tears
You might vomit, have stomach cramps or diarrhea.
What are the sign of a dangerous food reaction?
If you have any of the following, call 9-1-1. An anaphylactic reaction moves very quickly and can cause death.
Hoarseness, throat tightness, or a lump in your throat.
Wheezing, chest tightness or having a hard time breathing.
Tingling in the hands or feet lips or scalp
How can I tell if I have food allergies?
If you think you are allergic to a food, an allergist/immunologist will do tests to find out which foods you are allergic to.

Allergy shots contain small amounts of the things that you are allergic to. These things are called allergens. The dose of allergen starts very low and is slowly increased over many weeks. The goal is to increase your immunity (resistance) to the allergens, and to reduce your allergy symptoms. When this happens, you can take less allergy medicine.
Allergy shots may help you if you have problems with allergies, such as:
Itchy, runny, or stuffy nose (allergic rhinitis)
Itch, watery, or red eyes (allergic conjunctivitis)
Allergy induced asthma
A life-threatening reaction to insect stings
Your doctor will decide the number of shots you will need. For the first six to nine months, the dose of allergen in each shot is a little bigger each week. This build-up phase can sometimes take longer than nine months. Once you have reached your highest dose, you will be in the “maintenance phase”. In this phase the dose remains the same with each shot. You may have fewer symptoms in the first six months of treatment. You should start having fewer symptoms after being on a maintenance dose for one to two years. You will continue to get shots for three to five years. It takes this long to protect you from allergens.
Often associated with the shot you can have redness, swelling, or pain at the site of the shot. These symptoms usually start 20 to 30 minutes after the shot and may not go away until the next day. This is typically well tolerated.
If you have a reaction that is bigger than one and a half inches wide, (half dollar size) you should tell your doctor. A reaction that lasts longer than 24 hours also should be reported to the doctor. Depending on the extent of the reaction, the amount of your next dose may need to be changed.
The benefits of treatment include:
You might be cured of your allergies.
You may need less allergy medicine.
You may be sick less often and miss less work or school because of illness.
You may feel better in general.
The shots may stop children from getting other allergies.
The shots may stop children with allergies from getting asthma.

Should You Upgrade to Office 2007?

Well, it was going to happen eventually. Every couple of years Microsoft comes out with a new version of Microsoft Office. The newest version is now Microsoft Office 2007 which was released earlier this year.
Unlike the previous versions, this one has a totally different interface which noticeably increases the learning curve for this program. Menu bars and dialog boxes that you're accustomed to are now either eliminated or merged with others in some cases. Features that you've learned over the years to find quickly are now a hunting game.
As a small business owner you are not always in the position to buy the latest technology on the market nor do you have lots of time to learn new software. So I've put together a few questions you can ask yourself to see if it makes sense for you to upgrade soon:
Do you communicate regularly with businesses or people who are already using Office 2007? If you do, you may not be able to open documents that were saved in the Office 2007. There are remedies for this though. Microsoft does have a viewer you can install so you can read Office 2007 files. Also you can ask the person sending you the document to save the file format you're using. That capability does exist in the Office 2007 version.
Can you allocate plenty of spare time to take a Office 2007 course? As I mentioned before, the learning curve is high with the version of Microsoft Office. You'll have to reprogram your brain to flow with this new interface. Features that you have come to find so in your current version will now have to be hunted for in Office 2007. Even common features like spell check, print, new document, open are not readily available in one click like they use to be. The good news is you can customize your toolbar and add those features that you use frequently to a one-click view
Are you willing to install Office 2007 on a separate computer so you can learn it but still work in the current version until you're completely comfortable? I added this question because of my experience with Office 2007. As I was first learning this new version of Office my productivity went down because features that I was so use to finding in my current version was taking me a lot more time to find in this new version. (And I'm a fast learner!) So if you are going to upgrade and you're working with impending deadlines, I suggest you wait, unless you have the luxury of having access to both versions. The time it will take you to get things done in the newer version of Office will definitely slow down your productivity.
Are you satisfied with the features available in your current version Office? Sometimes the new features may not make a difference in how you're currently using the product so there really is no rush to upgrade if you're getting everything you need.
Do you have a resource you can turn to for questions you may have as you get use to Office 2007? This will help reduce the learning curve and make the transition the newer version a much more pleasant experience. Also when a newer version of their software is release, Microsoft continues to provide support for older versions but the support is usually for a limited time. You may still find other technical support providers that will help you with your older Office version.
If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you may put upgrading your Microsoft Office version as a priority on your business list this year. Otherwise it's really not a necessity to upgrade right not and you can hold out a little bit longer.

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of dilated blood vessels in the legs by injecting various substances into the blood vessels to scar them down and make them disappear. Despite a proliferation of vascular lasers which are available, injection is still the gold standard to which other methods are compared. What is Mohs' micrographic surgery?
Mohs' micrographic surgery is a specialized, highly effective technique for the removal of skin cancer. The procedure was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederick Mohs at the University of Wisconsin and is now practiced worldwide. Mohs' surgery differs from other skin cancer treatments in that it permits the immediate and complete microscopic examination of the removed cancerous tissue so that all roots and extensions of the cancer can be treated and eliminated. Due to the meticulous method in which tissue is removed and examined, Mohs' micrographic skin cancer surgery has been recognized as the skin cancer treatment with the highest reported cure rate.
The advantages of the Mohs' micrographic surgical procedure are many. Some skin cancers can be deceptively large. By that, we mean far more extensive under the skin than they appear to be from the surface. These cancers may have roots in the skin or may follow along blood vessels or nerves. The Mohs' surgery technique is specifically designed to remove these cancers by tracking and removing these cancerous roots. Mohs' surgery removes mainly the cancerous tissue, while saving as much normal skin as possible. There are special indications for the Mohs' surgical technique. Mohs' surgery is typically used for those skin cancers that have recurred following previous treatment or for cancers in areas that are at high risk for recurrence. This surgery is also indicated for cancers located in areas such as the nose, eyelids, lip, hands, and feet, in which maximal preservation of healthy tissue is critical for functional and cosmetic purposes.
The Mohs' surgical excision technique is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in the dermatologist's office. The patient is awake during the entire procedure. Discomfort is usually minimal and no greater than it would be for a routine skin cancer surgery.
